As reported by Brooklyn Eagle in the article titled “Councilmember Restler grants $500,000 to restore streetlamps in Brooklyn Heights”, a half-million-dollar grant has been awarded to preserve the architectural heritage of one of New York City’s most historic neighborhoods. Councilmember Lincoln Restler announced the $500,000 allocation to restore the district’s vintage streetlamps, continuing a legacy supported by past city and federal leaders.

The restoration will focus on the reintroduction of the iconic Bishop’s Crook streetlamps—elegantly curved cast-iron poles that date back to the early 1900s. These ornate fixtures, once widespread across New York City’s narrow streets, will replace the more modern, non-historic lighting currently in place. Their revival aims to enhance the charm and cultural identity of Brooklyn Heights, the city’s first designated historic district, established in 1965.
