As shared by Ephemeral New York in the article “The Loveliest Lamppost in New York Is in Harlem”, one of the city’s most beautiful historic streetlights quietly stands in a small triangular park at West 143rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue. This cast iron, twin-mast lamppost continues to illuminate the Hamilton Heights neighborhood with a nostalgic charm dating back to the early 20th century.

Designated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in a 1997 report, this rare “flaming arc” lamp is a relic from an era when lampposts were not just functional, but architectural statements. Once more common along Lower Fifth Avenue, this twin-mast design adds both character and historical context to the Harlem streetscape. Its elegant form, intricate ironwork, and balanced proportions evoke a time when lighting played a central role in shaping a neighborhood’s identity.
