As outlined by 6sqft in their article “Blue lamp posts in Battery Park City illustrate height of potential flooding from next severe storm,” a new project along Battery Park City’s waterfront shows just how vulnerable New York’s coastlines are to future climate-driven storms. Blue-painted lamp posts, marked between 18 and 23.5 feet above sea level, demonstrate the possible height of water during a severe storm surge.

The Battery Park City Authority (BCPA) developed the project using community feedback and a comprehensive resiliency assessment. Alongside the educational lamp posts, they are rolling out significant infrastructure improvements aimed at protecting the waterfront. This summer, BCPA will launch the South Battery Park City Resiliency Project, installing a continuous flood barrier from the Museum of Jewish Heritage through Wagner Park and beyond.
