As reported by The New York Times in the article “In Los Angeles, Art That’s Worth the Detour”, Chris Burden’s Urban Light installation outside the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has become a magnet for both tourists and locals. Comprising 200 salvaged cast-iron lampposts from the 1920s and ’30s, the installation glows after sunset, forming what the artist describes as an “open-air building.”
Urban Light is more than just a photo op—it represents a growing trend in L.A. known as drive-by art, where installations are meant to be experienced from the road, transforming everyday commutes into cultural moments. Museum director Michael Govan has even compared Burden’s piece to the Parthenon, citing its architectural scale and visual impact.
