As reported by Cambridge Today in the article “New Heritage Lighting on Salisbury Avenue First Stage in Effort to Replace Galt’s Iconic Globe Lights,” the City of Cambridge is taking careful steps toward upgrading its historic street lighting while preserving its century-old aesthetic charm. A trial installation of new heritage-style lights has received cautious support from the city’s heritage committee.
The initiative began with the Salisbury Avenue Reconstruction Project, which proposed installing decorative globe lights along Victoria Park. These fixtures would replace the iconic 1914 globe lights that have become synonymous with the Dickson Hill Heritage Conservation District (HCD). However, challenges emerged when the original mould for the historic lights could not be located, and recreating the exact design while meeting modern safety standards proved difficult.
