As reported by Untapped Cities in the article “How Old Are These Gas Street Lamps by the BQE?”, the flickering gas lamps lining Poplar Street in Brooklyn Heights evoke 19th-century charm—but they aren’t nearly as old as they appear. These nostalgic fixtures were actually installed in the 1980s during a local development project aimed at preserving the historic ambiance of the neighborhood.
Brooklyn Heights, home to New York City’s first designated historic district, boasts beautiful period architecture and brick-lined streets. The gas-style lamps were chosen to enhance that aesthetic, echoing the design of genuine 1860s-era gaslights once found throughout New York. Featuring classic eight-paned lanterns topped with an eagle finial, the replicas offer a striking reminder of the city’s lighting history—even if they were never actually powered by gas.
