As highlighted in the Bluff Park Neighborhood Association’s article “Bringing Lamppost History Back”, the early 20th-century movement for ornamental street lighting wasn’t just about visibility—it was about safety, civic pride, and beauty. A 1925 print ad from Union Metal boldly claimed, “Dark streets are dangerous streets,” advocating for public safety through decorative lighting, which they called “silent sentinels” guarding both pedestrians and motorists.
That legacy has been rekindled in Bluff Park, Long Beach, where a group of neighbors launched the Bluff Park Historic Lamppost Project in 2014. Originally sparked by a centennial home celebration and a shared desire to preserve the historic charm of the neighborhood, residents came together—many for the first time—to safeguard the area’s architectural integrity. What began as a celebration evolved into a grassroots preservation movement.
