As highlighted in OB Rag’s article, “San Diego’s Historic Streetlights,” the iconic streetlights that have illuminated the streets and neighborhoods of San Diego for over a century now face an unnecessary threat of demolition. Despite being structurally sound and capable of enduring for another hundred years with minimal repairs, the City of San Diego has proposed replacing them with new fixtures, sparking outrage among the community.
These historic streetlights are more than functional infrastructure; they are a tangible link to San Diego’s rich history and culture. Crafted with the design ethos of their time, they enhance the city’s sense of place and provide continuity between past and present. Replacing these resilient fixtures disregards their intrinsic value and perpetuates wastefulness, erasing a significant part of the community’s heritage.
The move has been widely criticized as fiscally irresponsible and counterproductive. Advocates argue that reasonable repairs and restoration would maintain their charm and functionality for future generations. Urgent action is required to halt this plan and advocate for the preservation of these historic gems.
